Doug Holderfield, better known as “Uncle Doug” on the radio, the voice of the Elba\u00a0Tigers, and owner\/operator of Weevil 101, passed away Saturday, May 27.<\/p>\nDoug Holderfield, better known as “Uncle Doug” on the radio, the voice of the Elba\u00a0Tigers, and owner\/operator of Weevil 101, passed away Saturday, May 27.<\/p>\n
He spent 62 years in broadcasting, beginning his radio career in 1958 at WFPA in Fort Payne at the bottom, as a part-timer, and later became general manager. He also worked at WPXE-Starke FL, WPLK-Rockmart GA, WIYN-Rome GA, WGAD-Gadsden, WZOB-Fort Payne and the Dekalb County News<\/em>.\u00a0In 1969, he and his family moved to Elba, where he purchased WELB-AM. In 1986 he opened WZTZ-FM. In 2006, WZTZ was moved to Enterprise and became WVVL-FM, otherwise known as Weevil 101.
