The hosts of these programs were hugely popular to generations of children. Such is the case with Birmingham\u2019s very own \u201cCousin Cliff.\u201d Even these many years later, to those of a certain age, hearing his name is all it takes to produce a smile, and really, what could be more important than to bring decades of joy to countless boys and girls? For that, and for his many other contributions to the industry, the Alabama Broadcasters Association is proud to posthumously induct James Clifton Holman, Jr into the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28452\" src=\"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/BW-CC-on-set.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"207\">&nbsp;\u201cYou know back in the fifties, people were just starved for anything on television. Dad used to say that he could remember watching other people&#8217;s shows and they would literally put on a record and you would watch the records spinning,\u201d laughs Holman\u2019s son, Kyle. \u201cThey would do little windup toys to hop around because people just hadn&#8217;t figured out what television could do yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28465\" src=\"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-bw-with-kids-on-set-1-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-bw-with-kids-on-set-1-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-bw-with-kids-on-set-1.jpg 458w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>That was the state of locally produced TV programming at the time Mobile native Holman started his broadcast career in Birmingham.&nbsp; \u201cLoveman\u2019s department store was looking to make \u2026 what we would call an infomercial \u2026 an extended spot,\u201d explains Kyle. \u201cDad was doing magic and puppets and that sort of thing and they hired him to sell products using his puppets.&nbsp; It just broke out from there to get bigger and bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28464\" src=\"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-color-with-kids-on-set-1-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-color-with-kids-on-set-1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-color-with-kids-on-set-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cWhen they decided to put him on a full-blown TV show, he was still very young \u2013 in his early 20\u2019s, and you know everybody had an \u2018Uncle This\u2019 or an \u2018Uncle That\u2019\u201d, says Kyle. \u201cDad was too young to be an \u2018Uncle\u2019 so they decided to make him a cousin. And that\u2019s where \u2018Cousin Cliff\u2019 came from.\u201d&nbsp; From 1954 to 1968, Holman starred in WVTM\u2019s \u201cThe Tip-Top Clubhouse\u201d which eventually morphed into \u201cCousin Cliff\u2019s Clubhouse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28463\" src=\"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-in-car-bad-photo-2-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-in-car-bad-photo-2-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CC-in-car-bad-photo-2.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Holman left television for a while, working both in and out of media, until 1985, when he brought the character and show back to life on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cable_television\">cable television<\/a>. For a time, the program also aired on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WDBB\">WDBB<\/a>-TV. In 1990, in a move to a Saturday timeslot on WBRC-TV, the program was renamed&nbsp;Cousin Cliff&#8217;s Clubhouse, where it ran for two years.&nbsp; After which, Holman again produced a cable version for Jack&#8217;s Hamburgers. After this short run on cable, Holman retired from television altogether.<\/p>\n<p>He continued to perform his magic and comedy act and worked as a manager for the Parliament House hotel, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_relations\">public relations<\/a>&nbsp;manager for the local chapter of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Lung_Association\">American Lung Association<\/a> and an announcer for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WMJJ\">WCRT<\/a>&nbsp;radio. Holman also served a term on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vestavia_Hills,_Alabama\">Vestavia Hills<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_council\">city council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28455 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Color-CC-with-Popeye-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Color-CC-with-Popeye-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Color-CC-with-Popeye.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>Clifton Holman, Jr. passed away in 2008 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s. &nbsp;His battle with the disease was highlighted in the 2009 HBO documentary The Alzheimer&#8217;s Project.&nbsp; Even that heart-breaking illness couldn\u2019t completely rob Cousin Cliff of his deeply embedded entertainment skills.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Holman tells a story about a time he went to visit his dad in a hospice care facility. His mother told him that his father wasn\u2019t \u201chere\u201d on that day, but Kyle gave it a try saying, \u201cHi Dad, we\u2019re here because we wanted to see you.\u201d His father kept his eyes on the TV and didn\u2019t respond. Then Kyle had an idea: maybe he could reach his dad in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Dad. You got ten dollars in one pocket; you got twenty dollars in the other pocket.
