{"id":7316,"date":"2016-01-12T07:05:06","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T13:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/?page_id=7316"},"modified":"2016-01-12T07:05:06","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T13:05:06","slug":"reviewing-proper-grounding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/al-ba.com\/wp2\/reviewing-proper-grounding\/","title":{"rendered":"Reviewing Proper Grounding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<div align=\"left\">The ABA Engineering Academy starts its 2016 &#8220;Continuing Educational Series&#8221; with a basic review of proper grounding techniques.\u00a0 While this may seem elementary it never hurts to review the &#8220;why and how&#8221; of things we sometime take for granted.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>When engineers talk about proper grounding and bonding most of it is centered around lightning protection and\/or elimination of ground loops between equipment. However the first reason we should bond and ground equipment is <em><strong>Safety!<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div>So lets look &#8220;under the hood&#8221; and understand what is grounding?<\/div>\n<div>The purpose of grounding is to electrically interconnect conductive objects in order to minimize voltage differences between them. An excellent broad definition is that a ground is simply a return path for current. We must remember that current always returns to its source through either an intentional or accidental path &#8211; <em>electrons don&#8217;t care and they don&#8217;t read schematics!<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Bonding is the practice of intentionally electrically connecting metallic items which will bring all the bonded items to the same electrical potential as a protection from electrical shock. The bonded items can then be connected to ground to bring them to earth potential.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In a properly wired electrical circuit we have three wires.\u00a0 The neutral (white) and line (black) wires are part of the normal load current circuit shown by the arrows. Note that the neutral (white) and safety ground (green) wires<\/div>\n<div>of each branch circuit are tied or &#8220;bonded&#8221; to each other and to an earth ground rod at the service entrance.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/6ca92027201\/1fb680c3-4f35-4ac7-b055-dd6c09697923.jpg\" width=\"416\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.245\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The green ground wire is actually call a &#8220;safety ground&#8221;.\u00a0 Any ac line powered device with exposed conductive parts (including signal connectors) can\u00a0become a shock or electrocution hazard if it develops certain internal defects.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/6ca92027201\/6c53d20a-73da-473f-a6e1-11fd80296f8e.jpg\" width=\"416\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.246\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<div>The outlet safety ground is routed, through the green safety ground wire to the neutral conductor at the main breaker panel. This low impedance\u00a0connection to neutral allows high fault current to flow, quickly tripping the circuit breaker and removing power from the circuit.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>As a result of this protection one should never use a 3 to 2 wire &#8220;ground lifter&#8221; to eliminate hum in the equipment.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/6ca92027201\/fb8a0fa6-d91c-4a0f-9099-601ec6552ecf.jpg\" width=\"154\" height=\"112\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.244\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As mentioned above the bonded safety grounds are normally connected to an &#8220;earth ground&#8221;, consisting of a copper ground rod of at least 10 feet driven in well compacted soil.\u00a0 We often think that if one rod does a good job then adding additional rods will be even better.\u00a0 Well&#8230;yes and no.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If multiple rods are used they must be bonded together.\u00a0 Since soil has resistance just like any other conductor, earth ground connections are not at zero\u00a0volts, with respect to each other or any other mystical or &#8220;absolute&#8221; reference point.\u00a0 The soil resistance between separate ground rods can allow thousands of volts to develop between them if lightning strike current should actually flow in one of them.\u00a0 This is due to simple Ohms law&#8230;E = I x R.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Remember\u00a0spacing of rods deals with a theory known as the Sphere of Influence.\u00a0 Basically you want to space your rods out 2-times (2X) the length of the rods.\u00a0 So, if you are installing 10-ft grounding rods, you would want them spaced at 20-ft intervals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Notice in this drawing (courtesy of Nautel) how all the ground rods are bonded together and the various &#8220;safety grounds&#8221; are connect at a central point.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/6ca92027201\/984890e5-ce55-40ca-b8ed-29353264476e.jpg\" width=\"416\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.247\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This single point (as it is called) ground system offers the best solution for routing stray currents to earth ground without going through the actual equipment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In our next installment we will examine more in details stray currents caused by lightning and unbalanced loads.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>additional credit for graphics web.mit.edu<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/6ca92027201\/580d64c8-f32c-46ec-837d-bf5a0a06aa26.jpg\" width=\"416\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.210\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<div align=\"right\"><em>ABA Engineering Academy Corporate Sponsor<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ABA Engineering Academy starts its 2016 &#8220;Continuing Educational Series&#8221; with a basic review of proper grounding techniques.\u00a0 While this may seem elementary it never hurts to review the &#8220;why and how&#8221; of things we sometime take for granted.
