WBHM seeks an environmental reporter

Come be WBHM\u2019s new environmental reporter and bring stories to our audience from one of the most biodiverse states in the country. You\u2019ll cover an array of topics from climate change to sustainability to pollution to the natural world. The ideal candidate can break down public policy and scientific concepts while finding compelling sources who engage listeners and readers. The job requires a keen eye for stories, attention to detail, versatility and excellent news judgment.<\/p>\n
Your work will air on WBHM, publish online at wbhm.org and post on the station\u2019s social media platforms. We\u2019re also interested to hear your ideas. What can you bring to the table to push WBHM\u2019s journalism forward?<\/p>\n
WBHM is part of the Gulf States Newsroom, a regional collaboration among stations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana and NPR, which will allow your stories to be shared across the region. Our reporters are also regularly on NPR News and other national programs and podcasts.<\/p>\n
Key Duties and Responsibilities<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Pitch, report and produce feature, spot and digital stories for WBHM<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Participate in interviews with WBHM hosts<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Stay up-to-date on issues affecting Birmingham and Alabama<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Work collaboratively with others in the WBHM newsroom and editorial partners<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Participate in station fundraising<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Other duties as assigned<\/p>\n
Qualifications<\/p>\n
Bachelor\u2019s degree in Journalism, English, Media, Communications or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Minimum hiring rate must meet the most current FLSA guidelines for salary level and basis to remain exempt.<\/p>\n
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities<\/p>\n
\u00b7 A proven track record of reporting in a journalistic setting<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Excellent communication and organizational skills and demonstrated writing ability<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Familiarity with audio storytelling, the public media system and community engagement<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Ability to work independently and as part of a team<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Deep knowledge of Birmingham, Alabama and the South<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Multilingual candidates encouraged to apply<\/p>\n

Annual Salary Range: $50,050 \u2013 $81,330<\/p>\n
This is a 3-year, grant-funded position. Future funding is not guaranteed, although we are committed to finding sustainable sources of support for the position.<\/p>\n
This is a full-time position based at WBHM in Birmingham, AL. The reporter is a University of Alabama at Birmingham employee enjoying all full-time staff benefits.<\/p>\n
