William “Uncle Doug” Holderfield: 1937-2017

doug-holderfieldDoug Holderfield, better known as “Uncle Doug” on the radio, the voice of the Elba Tigers, and owner/operator of Weevil 101, passed away Saturday, May 27.

He spent 62 years in broadcasting, beginning his radio career in 1958 at WFPA in Fort Payne at the bottom, as a part-timer, and later became general manager. He also worked at WPXE-Starke FL, WPLK-Rockmart GA, WIYN-Rome GA, WGAD-Gadsden, WZOB-Fort Payne and the Dekalb County News. In 1969, he and his family moved to Elba, where he purchased WELB-AM. In 1986 he opened WZTZ-FM. In 2006, WZTZ was moved to Enterprise and became WVVL-FM, otherwise known as Weevil 101. He devoted his entire career to serving the public in these communities.

Visitation Tuesday 6-8 PM, and funeral services Wednesday at 2 PM will be at Hayes Funeral Home in Elba.
