Agnes Simpson (born 1924, died 2012) has enjoyed a broadcasting career that stands as a model of leadership and integrity for broadcaster everywhere. She was the first women Alabama Broadcaster of the Year in 1987. She attended the University of Alabama; was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and served in the Navy during World War II.

Agnes Simpson has been a true pioneer of advertising in Southeast Alabama ever since she, along with her late husband, R.A. Dowling, put a 5,000 watt (WOOF-AM 560) station on the air in 1947. Independently she had the foresight in 1963, to filed for the first FM stereo FM’s in the State of Alabama. In 1964, WOOF-FM99.7, became one of the first FM Stereo radio stations in the state. Through the years, Agnes has sold commercials, broadcast on-air and in 2008 still serves as President of WOOF Inc. where she works each day and plays a vital part in WOOF’s continuing success.

Some of the honors that have been bestowed on Agnes include: The Advertising Federation’s highest award, The Silver Medalist/Citizen of the Year; Dothan’s Woman of the Year in 1961; and the Humanitarian of the Year from the Arthritis Foundation in 1996.

Not only has Agnes Simpson played a significant part in the broadcasting industry, she has also been involved with numerous organizations working to make her community a better place to live. Some of the organizations she has been a part of include: Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army, Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Board, Friends of the Opera House, Eclectas Club, and the Dothan Advertising Federation (now AAF Dothan)…just to name a few.

Agnes has devoted a lifetime of service to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity where she was the first woman to serve on the vestry and be elected by parishioners to be Junior and Senior Warden. She is the mother of five children and grandmother of six grandchildren.
