INTERN – CBS 42

Are you a curious, passionate, energetic, and hardworking student studying communications, journalism, video production, human resource, marketing (sales), meteorology, or other communication degree? Are you looking for a hands-on learning experience which will help you to further prepare you for an exciting career?

WIAT-TV in Birmingham, Alabama is looking for interns for fall, spring and

summer semesters. The unpaid internship is offered to those currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning and must be receiving college credit. Interns will experience different phases of a television station’s day-to-day operations as a supplement to their academic curriculum.

Internship Areas include:

Sales / Marketing (Account Executive, Sales Administration, Digital Sales)
Human Resource
News (Producer, Reporter, Photographer, Editor)
Digital Media (Writing for web and social media)
Meteorology
Sports (Producer, Photographer, Reporter)
Production (Newscast Director, Audio/Camera operator)
Promotions / Graphics (Commercial Producer, Video Editing)
Internship Details:

Internship schedules will be based on requirements from college or university
Interns will be well-supervised and participate in a meaningful learning experience
The internship for semester credit will start in September for fall, January for spring, and May for summer. Duration of internship can be between 12-15 weeks.
Internship is unpaid.
Intern is responsible for their own transportation.
Requirements & Skill:

Entering juniors and seniors studying broadcast journalism, video production, marketing, human resource, or other communication degrees
Internships must be for school credit
Provide a cover letter that includes: the type of internship/position/department you seek, the semester you’re applying for, what job you are hoping to be hired for after graduation, why are you interested in CBS 42, and why should we choose you as our intern.
Provide a letter from Professor/Advisor certifying intern is a junior or senior and will receive academic credit for participating. Email letter to internship@cbs42.com.

NEWS INTERNSHIP – WVTM

Come join WVTM-TV, the Hearst Television station in the Birmingham market as an intern this spring! WVTM-TV is a key community partner in Birmingham, providing breaking news, weather, and other information vital to local audiences through our newscasts. An NBC affiliate, WVTM-TV also provides entertainment programming and partners with the community on important local initiatives.

As an HTV intern, you will come to understand how a television station operates and be expected to contribute to the operation. You will be engaged in the newsroom, assisting producers, editors, assignment editors, reporters, photographers, and anchors. The intern will also have the opportunity to accompany crews in the field.

What you’ll do and learn:

Editorial process (broadcast and/or digital)
Writing / storytelling
Newscast producing / story selection
Explore broadcast and digital marketing and learn the responsibilities of the Creative Services Department
Gain an overview of the technical areas of the station (News Edit, ENG Receive, Microwave News Gathering, Satellite News Gathering, News Photography, Studio Operations, Control Room Operations, Air Operations, Maintenance, IT, etc.)
Job Responsibilities:

Help report news stories, select, research, and write content for live newscasts and digital platforms
Communicate, coordinate, and execute creative vision with the team of anchors, reporters, meteorologists, photographers, editors, and production staff
Help producers and reporters with interviews, including establishing contacts
Conduct news interviews in-person or through remote technology like Zoom
Work with and guiding reporters and photographers in story production
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

An interest in journalism
The ability to be versatile, as Fellows handle a wide range of topics and subjects
Excellent writing, spelling, grammar, and copy-editing skills
The ability to remain calm under pressure and deal with the stresses and pressures of time-sensitive newscast production
Must be well-versed in local and national news stories
