Funeral services were held June 3rd in Monroeville for Carolyn Hall Stewart, 91, whose family has owned radio station WMFC since its beginning in 1952. She and son David have owned the station since her husband and David’s father, Bill, died in 1995. David, who also serves on the ABA Board of Directors, has managed WMFC since 1985.
Born and raised in Bay Minette, Carolyn Stewart graduated from Baldwin County High School. She and her husband met while he was involved with James H. “Jimmy” Faulkner, Sr. in owning the Baldwin Times and Monroe Journal newspapers. The partners also started Bay Minette radio station WBCA in 1957. Stewart became sole owner of the Monroeville properties in 1958. The Monroe Journal sold to Bolton Newspapers in 1996.
Carolyn Stewart was a homemaker, accomplished cook, family caregiver, and lifelong mentor, advocate and champion of her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroeville and enjoyed dining with friends and hosting family dinners.
Other survivors include son Steve Stewart of Troy, daughter Orpah Stewart Travis of Fort Myers, Fla., their spouses, and five grandchildren.
The family prefers that any memorials go to the Alabama Broadcasters Association Education Foundation or the Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation.
