FCC adopts new AM Translator rules
The expanded use of FM translators for AM stations had been talked about for some time. The Commission decided on two filing windows for translators…one would allow AM stations to move an FM translator up to 250 miles to rebroadcast that AM station’s signal, and a 2017 windows exclusively for AM stations to apply for a new FM translator construction permit.
It appears that the first filing window to move translators will open early in 2016. AM stations that are interested in this procedure should begin now to research all the fact and plan to operate quickly as the assignments will be on a first come first serve basics. The AM station must immediately apply to move the translator to an area that is within both the 2 mv/m contour of the AM station and within 25 miles of the AM station’s city of license. There is a proposed rule change to allow an AM station to locate a translator anywhere within 25 miles of the station, even if that area is not within the 2 mv/m contour.
