Engineering Notebook – AL EAS system now connected through IPAWS

December 5, 2013eng_notebook

We are happy to announce that the Required Monthly Test (RMT) issued Thursday 12/5 at 11:09 AM was distributed through both the GSSNet Satellite Network and the IPAWS server in Washington.

This greatly increases our redundancy of the State EAS distribution network. Our thanks to Jeb Hargove with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency for his work with FEMA to make this possible and the folks at Global Security Systems for setting up the connection through the Alert Studio portal.

Reviewing several EAS units around the state indicated stations received the test from both CAP servers and their required monitor source. We continue to work with EAS equipment manufactures to make sure all television stations and cable systems can utilize the expanded text capability of CAP.

Please review your EAS unit logs to verify that you received the test from the IPAWS CAP server. We ask for your help in reviewing the status of reception around the state. Simply send a email report to the EAS Coordinator below. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Engineering Notebook – Academy classes not just for engineers

eng_notebookNovember 28, 2013

Do you have personnel at your station that could benefit from learning more about the technical side of broadcasting? Announcers, production, master control operators, IT managers, even station managers can gain valuable knowledge about why we have all that “stuff” in the equipment rack and the basics of how it works.

The ABA Engineering Academy offers two separate five day courses covering Radio and Television Broadcast Engineering. In addition to personnel at your station there are probably others in the community that have shown an interest in getting into broadcasting.

While the classes are designed for those with minimal or no technical experience, seasoned engineers have also attended for a refresher course as well as picking up needed information about new technology.

The Engineering Academy is an excellent way for those in your organization to become more familiar with the “technical side” of broadcasting, creating a much more efficient and valuable employee.
Best of all the Alabama Broadcasters Association offers these classes at no cost to the students.

The first Radio class is February 10th – 14th, and the Television class is March 3rd – 7th.

Contact Larry Wilkins to sign up or get more information. All classes are held at the ABA Engineering Training Center 2180 Parkway Lake Drive in Hoover, AL.
