Student Media Adviser

Posting Job Summary: This position is responsible for the The Flor-Ala student newspaper and the Diorama yearbook which involves serving as the advisor to the editorial staffs, business staff, photography staff, production staff, business team, and volunteer staff members of the student publications.
Essential job duties include: Prepare students with skills necessary for a career in the modern media market; Promote journalistic education and appreciation throughout the community through passive and active programming; Recruit, train, lead and advise student leaders in Student Media by providing program support services, critiques, evaluations, and assessments of student work activities and assisting student leaders in general media operations; Creates innovation in a collegiate media environment, builds consensus, develops relationships with academic areas, and provides experiential learning opportunities for students in related majors; Provides leadership by promoting awareness of media law, ethics, technology, best practices, and media research studies to staff and students; Champion the role of Student Media services to the University and its diversified populations through professional meetings and networking opportunities; Protect the First Amendment rights of students; Works with student supervisors to plan training for staffs throughout the year; Recognize and develop leadership and personal growth opportunities among student staffs; Serve as non-voting member of the Student Media Board as chair, and organizes four meetings a year, plus all interviews for Student Media positions; Plan and implement annual Student Media Boot Camp for each staff to teach journalism, advertising and marketing skills? including (but not limited to)layout and design, news writing, feature writing, photography, multimedia reporting and ethics; Conduct midyear evaluations?led by student supervisors?of all Student Media paid staff members; Conduct leadership and management training throughout the year for student supervisors; Travel with students to multiple conferences related to their work; Manage two departmental budgets including student activity fees and revenue accounts; Prepare bid specifications for newspaper and yearbook; Plan, budget, and purchase of supplies and equipment; Work with outside vendors for printing and other services; Troubleshoot production and IT problems; Plan, oversee, edit, and design the Student Handbook; Performs all other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities: Stay abreast of media trends at both college and professional level, and aide students in implementing those trends; Establish a network of fellow advisors at colleges throughout the state and nationwide through personal contact and professional organizations; Maintain a network of industry professionals and Student Media alumni to provide support to the students; Supervise and assign tasks to a student office worker.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or other related field required; Three to five years of related experience required; Knowledge of various aspects of media production including, but not limited to, news writing, photography, video design, website development, advertising, and digital journalism; Proven effectiveness in implementing advertising sales strategies that adapt with changing environments.
